Spotlight Feature: Young Entrepreneurs

Move over Yankee candle, there’s a new candle maker in town!!!

When you think of entrepreneurs, what comes to mind? Gone are the days when the word “entrepreneur” would evoke thoughts of successful businessmen and women on wall street. These days, we now see tons of young entrepreneurs shattering proverbial glass ceilings everywhere. As the saying goes, age ain’t nothing but a number, such as the case for 12-year-old entrepreneur, Ke’Ajanay Terrell, CEO of KeKe’s Candles.

KeKe, who is amazingly talented, has been making candles as a hobby for a few months now. Her mom tells me her interest was piqued during several of their outings to Michaels craft store. What started as frequent trips to gather candle making supplies turned into a full-fledged business idea.

I had the pleasure of interviewing this astonishing young lady for a business spotlight feature on my blog. Keke has the wisdom of kids twice her age yet is still just a sweet kid who loves to play, hang out with friends and oh yeah, bake cakes in her spare time. Is there anything this kid cannot do?

Learn a bit about KeKe in this interview.

When did you start making candles? I started making candles in March 2020 from a candle kit I got for my birthday. Since then, I realized I really enjoyed making candles.

How did you come up with the idea to start a candle business? I came up with the idea because my mom always used to buy candles and wax melts, so I thought since I enjoy making candles, why not turn it into a hobby! I made candles for my family and got really good feedback, so I decided to keep going and turn it into my very own business.

What types of candles do you make? I make 100% all-natural soy wax candles and wax melts. I also make fun cupcake candles to incorporate my love of baking.

What is your favorite candle scent? Honestly, I love them all but if I had to pick one it would be Girls Night. It is a blend of fruity and floral which I love.

What do you enjoy most about what you do? Picking new scents.

What tips would you offer to kids your age about starting a candle business? Go for it and never give up.

Just for Fun:

One word to describe you would be… Determined

What do you love most about your siblings? The thing I love most about my siblings is that they can always make me laugh.

What is your favorite thing to do with your friends? My favorite things to do with my friends is gymnastics and go to the park.

What would you do if you made all the rules at home? Send my parents to their rooms and stay up late.

What makes you so awesome? Something that makes me awesome is having a positive attitude and seeing the good in any situation.

As you can tell, I am extremely optimistic about the future of KeKe’s Candles. Being a staunch candle lover myself, I am 100% in support of our young entrepreneurs. KeKe’s parents have done a wonderful job cultivating her creativity and planting seeds of positivity within her. I also commend her on the courage that it took to act upon her idea. I have no doubt that she will soar far and beyond all that she can imagine.
